Wed, 09/07/2008 Dinamo Zagreb 6 Hajduk Split 6 Whites contrive to manage a 6-6 draw having looked safe at 6-3 ahead with 20 minutes to go. New recruit (Hugo Fuller's friend) Adam fails to turn up for blues, who nevertheless cope despite being a man short.
Wed, 25/06/2008 Dinamo Zagreb 6 Hajduk Split 4 Blues take lead 5-0 with a couple of shorty specials and both arbibs contributing. Whites finally score after 45 mins courtesy of n jones, and a brace from warner n brings the final score to a slightly more respectable 6-4, especially given that blues were generously gifted 2 goals - one from a finch (as usual) and the other most likely presented by reynolds at some point during the match. Rupert's absence surprisingly doesn't improve whites fortunes…
Wed, 18/06/2008 Dinamo Zagreb 7 Hajduk Split 4 Whites start very strongly going 3 up within about 10 minutes. All downhill after that with blues scoring 7 on the trot; Would have been more but for several vital saves from Mark Cuddigan. Rupert hits both posts for whites in two consecutive shots indicating that it wasn't going to be whites' day, despite a late rally. Game is abandoned as a Nick Jones 30 yard strike somehow finds the top corner of the net.
Wed, 11/06/2008 Dinamo Zagreb 3 Hajduk Split 5 First match on the new hallowed turf. Warner hatrick seals victory as Finch decides to give the ball away more than once as the last man...; Rupert surprisingly rubbish. Can't remember much else.
Wed, 13/02/2008 Dinamo Zagreb 4 Hajduk Split 10 Whites 10 - Blues 4:Much changed line ups, and only 6 a side meant that there was acres of space and little defending on a cold Wednesday night - blues opened the scoring but were pegged back immediately, and once whites had equalised for a second time they took the lead and never looked back. Mark Davies found lots of room down the right hand flank and scored at will with a couple of fierce drives - reynolds adds two and hits the post, whites played some decent possession football at times, but overall standard was medium - Gillespie on the end of two tap ins for blues.
Wed, 16/01/2008 Dinamo Zagreb 5 Hajduk Split 5 Welcome back - worthless was a good match on Wednesday - 5-5 I think - JP played really well, scored a goal, worked quite hard and didn't have any cock ups - whites were on top for ages but couldn't make it count - we completely dominated the first 10 minutes of the second half and then blues scored (out of the blue) - Paddy managed to run around more than usual, and then made an amazing save from Jeff Romeo.
Wed, 12/12/2007 Dinamo Zagreb 7 Hajduk Split 11 Wednesday night saw the hallowed concrete dotted with some patches of ice (especially in the far corner) which meant that most of us twisted and turned slower and more gently than usual, where possible. Ed Swete's new shoes ensured that he stay upright for most of the game - close shaves for Olly and Duncan though. The teams looked evenly matched on paper, and blues raced into an early 5-2 lead in the first half, defending the easy goal. Duncan didn't brave the cold enough to take off his tracksuit, but otherwise blues were effective - taking chances pretty well, assisted by some lacklustre keeping on the first 2 goals. Second half, with whites attacking the icy patch, the tide swung in their favour - as it got cold it became harder and harder to stay upright, but whites managed to make the most of it, and ran away with things, with a number of well taken goals by warner and olly. Mark made some good saves when blues counterattacked, and in the end it was a simple victory for whites. Special mention to paddy, who sent an e-mail on Wednesday afternoon to a bunch of us trying to entice us away from playing for worthless to watching the arse.
Wed, 28/11/2007 Dinamo Zagreb 3 Hajduk Split 6 Blues take a 3-1 lead but then for some reason stop playing. With the aid of some goals from Ollie and Mark Davies, white claw the deficit back and then romp home to victory. It's my first match report: what do you think?
Wed, 21/11/2007 Dinamo Zagreb 5 Hajduk Split 6 Under torrential rain, a surprisingly good game in awful conditions is settled by a hat-trick of Ferdi chips, after he finally stopped cowering under an umbrella by the sidelines and got stuck in in the rain. The treacherous and slippery conditions lent themselves well to his brand of non running football – whites win 6-5.
Wed, 14/11/2007 Dinamo Zagreb 5 Hajduk Split 5 Match abandoned at a 5-5 draw as Hugo hits the tarmac under a heavy Swete tackle and then refuses to leave the pitch which would have allowed the rest of us to play 'next goal wins'. Olly on target with a few outstanding goals for whites to keep them in the game.
Wed, 07/11/2007 Dinamo Zagreb 2 Hajduk Split 4 Whites win a crowded affair 4-2. Top marksman O'Reilly on target with a header and a last minute penalty, after JP forgot he was playing English, not American football. He also forgot that he wasn't actually down to play. Warner scores with the head as well – Shorty claims both goals for Blues, one a right foot special from the edge of the box. Fuller converts into the playground when any touch would have put the ball in – mark davies’ cunning plan to only play one minute in goal backfires as injury time extends the game by 5 minutes or more. John Romeo’s comedy moment when he fell over the ball as last man allowing shorty to score from close range made up for by a fine game in defence for whites, keeping close tabs on blues danger men.
Wed, 31/10/2007 Dinamo Zagreb 9 Hajduk Split 6 The curse of Warner strikes again. Whites 2 game winning sequence grinds to a shuddering halt with the return of NW. Coupled with some shocking finishing from whites, Blues jumped out to an early lead which they never looked like losing. Blues all working hard, including a large post match presence in the pub – Shorty scored 5 goals, the longest range strike from less than a yard out – Burrows solid in defence and Inglis goalkeeping again denies a series of whites chances – worst miss from reynolds who blazes over the bar into the playground from close range. Ferdi taking on the midfield dynamo role (more midfield than dynamo) – finch solid in defence for whites, burrows likewise for blues - Blues win by 3 goals and deserved to do so.
Wed, 24/10/2007 Dinamo Zagreb 4 Hajduk Split 8 Much as arsenal have thrown off the shackles of playing with a frequently injured overbearing touchline presence this year, so whites renaissance continues without their talismanic captain, with an 8-4 victory on Wednesday night. Once again there was a no show for the blues, which left the sides 7 on 7, with Phelim switching to blues. Whites were dominant early on – Hugo took a ball in the face in the first 10 minutes, by which time Pete Davies had scored one, and Ed Swete stormed down the pitch before slotting a nice goal. Whites take a 4-0 lead, before easing up on the pressure, which leads to a brief blues comeback. Gillespie busy in midfield, JP anonymous after his early good form this season. Whites firmly in control after the break – highlights include comedy own goal by Romeo, who saves onto the post, before the ball rebounds off the back of his head into the goal, and Pete Davies nutmegging Shorty before beating the keeper at the near post to seal the win. Ed Swete on target again in the second half with a nicely taken goal from the edge of the box, Olly scores a left footed drive from the same range, and Rupert a nice length of the pitch counter attack, leaving blues defenders trailing in his wake…
Wed, 17/10/2007 Dinamo Zagreb 3 Hajduk Split 8 Unofficial: we did thump them a bit. and hugo got cross and called us cheating bastards for playing finch at the back. mostly I think he was annoyed that we bothered to mark him. pete davies got the first 4 goals and we pushed on from there. phelim was a no show. Official: Whites break their losing sequence against a determined blues team who played with a man less. Once again blues got shafted by the late no show of a player this time Phelim notable by his absence. Pete Davies takes advantage with a five minute hat-trick, and then adds 2 more for good measure. Finch composed at the back for whites most of the game, before being turned inside out by hugo (‘I didn’t think he would even try that’ he told us in the pub.) Ed Sweete, couldn’t, score, in a, brothel. If there had been a crowd, then these words would have been ringing out across the pitch as Sweete once again failed to convert a number of simple opportunities. John Romeo out-muscles his little brother (for the first time ever, apparently), and then emboldened, takes on Duncan, who tastes the tarmac. Hugo C scores a tasty goal. So does Reynolds – Blues whinging about whites extra man, makes no difference - Whites win 8-3.
Wed, 10/10/2007 Dinamo Zagreb 3 Hajduk Split 2 Blues were shafted by Charlie Fenton who didn't show up, and found themselves under the cosh for long periods in a low scoring first half. Olly puts whites into a one nil lead, neutralised by a rare forage into the opponents penalty area by Inglis, who slotted past the keeper with no problems. A lengthy delay after G converts one into the playground from under the posts leads into half time – 1-1 the score. Blues working hard – Shorty / Arbib / Rupert putting in the graft. Whites moving the ball around well – Olly through with time and space smacks it straight at Inglis in goal who makes a great save (this happened a few times) – Baker puts White into the lead after sharp one touch move the length of the pitch – Arbib header evens the score, and then with minutes to go with play sweeping from one end to the other Arbib wins the game for blues. G manages to balloon the ball over the fence at the other end, and Hugo contributes with a playground effort of his own. Whites finishing poor again.
Wed, 03/10/2007 Dinamo Zagreb 7 Hajduk Split 3 In Affectionate Remembrance of The Wellesley Arms, which died at Sydney street on 3rd October 2007, Deeply lamented by a large circle of sorrowing friends and acquaintances. The drinking culture that prevails amongst whites players was dealt a sore blow on Wednesday with the boarding up of the Wellesley Arms. The shock at the sight of our favourite boozer in such a state no doubt contributed to another lamentable performance by whites, who got thoroughly, and deservedly thrashed. Blues were playing some pretty good stuff, and Inglis was handy in goal again, Pete Davies industrious and Arbib and Shorty playing well. Whites complete refusal to mark once again contributed to their downfall. Turning around 5-0 down at half time, whites managed to mount the semblance of a comeback with 3 second half goals, but unfortunately the blues were more than equal to the task. Final score 7-3 blues.
Wed, 26/09/2007 Dinamo Zagreb 10 Hajduk Split 6 The turmoil that has been roiling the global markets and knocked 25% off the value of the Goldman Global alpha fund finally caught up the Worthless AFC as Wednesday night witnessed a 25-standard deviation event, something expected only every 100,000 years. The victims this time were the white team, who got pasted by an immaculate blues performance. Hugo opened his account with a header and proceeded to score 4 more goals – from all angles, and with some handy finishing – Duncan threaded a pinpoint ball ALONG THE GROUND. Arbib played his usual polished game – Inglis goalkeeping kept whites at bay when a comeback was in the offing – Burrows and Gillespie and Sweete did the rest. Blues finishing was uncanny - Warner’s performance (-3.9%) uncorrelated to his fund (+ 5.2%). Reynolds lets in a shocking goal. Kline balloons one over the fence. General lack of marking by whites contributes to thrashing. The sense that the world had turned upside down was then confirmed by the presence of 5 blues in the pub afterwards and no Olly. Extraordinary times, probably never to be repeated. Blues win 10-6 (I think that was the score)
Wed, 19/09/2007 Dinamo Zagreb 6 Hajduk Split 5 The midweek Arsenal home game ensured that the teams were decimated with the usual suspects placing club above country. Arbib decides late doors that he doesn't fancy it on a cold and windy Wednesday night. Gorton quickly opens his account with two goals, but cannot convert into the much coveted hat-trick. Whites have the extra player for the first half, a skilful and pacy sub (Rupert), but much over elaboration and poncing around in the oppo penalty area ensures that they only took a slender lead into the second half. Warner huffing and puffing, can’t beat anyone for pace yet as he still needs to do some fitness work – park plays above his usual standard, kline scores a nice chip – sweete misses a sitter (probably more than one in fact, some things never change) and shorty wins the game for blues with a fine header in the last minute having left his marker floundering behind.
Wed, 12/09/2007 Dinamo Zagreb 7 Hajduk Split 6 Dinamo win by one goal - late surge by whites doesn't quite carry them through - notable absentees - warner - swanning around the us on his 10th holiday of the year - finch nearly shafts his teammates and is saved by a late sub that evens up the numbers. Cuddigan, H claims a 3 minute hat trick and miraculously beats reynolds for pace over 5 yards. Poor finishing from whites contributes to downfall. An inspired John Park turns in one of his best performances, including some smart finishing, some sharp defending, and no goalkeeping blunders.
Wed, 26/04/2006 Chile - Italy - 7 man reds beat 8 man blues through combination of luck and skill - goals 2 for hugo c - one header, 2 for frenchie - header from ed sweete - romeo brothers clash in midfield leaving John sprawled on the floor.
Wed, 19/04/2006 Chile 6 Italy 6 Well the arsenal contingent didn't show, and Jeff Romeo was a late member of that - otherwise there was a problem with selection, (JP said he couldn't understand your codes and stuff on the website) so Ed Sweete wasn't selected on the website and had arranged to do something else. Lewis Holland turned up as a ringer , so we played 6 versus 5 with extra player for reds first half and blues second half. Reds were one goal up at half time, and Shaun switched to blues. Reds went 2 goals up and we managed to hold on until three minutes into extra time when blues equalised - mark davies made 2 goals and scored two - otherwise blues were lamentable in front of goal - julien was a bad culprit - i was trying to pass back to our keeper, but failed to realize he was several yards outside his area and only suceeded in passing the ball to julien, who was on his own in our area with an open goal and he managed to hit the outside of the post. lewis made a number of key last ditch blocks, ethan cleared one or two off the line, as did arbib, and jp managed to deflect a powerful duncan shot over the bar.. jp trod on the ball and landed on his arse - duncan was in the vicinity of this for the second time in two weeks - match was drawn 6-6. "barney only neglected to mention my 3 first half\ngoals. two 1/2 volleys -- one from the top of the 18\nthat flew into the upper corner." - Kline. "Sorry about that - the first one was rather special I must admit - probably best described as a screaming unstoppable half volley from the edge of the area." - Fatboy
Wed, 12/04/2006 Chile - Italy - Reds hold on to one goal lead in extra time to winn second in a row.Another balmy summer evening. Another victory for reds. Decent quality football all round. First half - evenly matched - ethan provides beautiful cross to reynolds head - straight at the keeper - 5 minutes later, ethan plays a one two, swings another beauty across - this time arbib shows the way and nods the ball in. Boris holding firm in blues defence as blues take a 4-2 lead. Romeo effective - can't remember who scored for blues - second half notable for duncan / barney clash which left barney flat on the tarmac nursing a bloody arm. post match analysis interupted by drunken bird in pub who was probably trying to chat us up.
Wed, 22/03/2006 Chile 5 Italy 4 This year has witnessed a Chelsea team with no englishmen, an Arsenal team with no englishmen, and on wednesday night for the first time ever, not one regular italian player was able to brave the cold - Rome, founded on seven hills, embodied in seven mortal representatives is no more. We hung our heads at the moment of the decline of the most extraordinary dominion which has ever invaded and oppressed the world; the fall of that immense empire, erected on the ruins of so many kingdoms, republics, and states both barbarous and civilized. Excuses as follows - warner - playing for another team - g - making sure his hairdo didn't get ruined before going skiing (other excuses to be added if you know what they are)- on to the game - reds win by a narrow margin(5-4 i think) - blues subs put up an admirable fight - highlights of the game include hugo cuddigan's miss from point blank range - unstoppable reynolds left footer from the edge of the area - reynolds dancing around hugo before sliding the ball into the bottom corner, and candidate for goal of the season - delicate lob by sebag from the right hand edge of the area leaving keeper with no chance.
Wed, 15/03/2006 Chile 7 Italy 6 7 man Reds win by 1 goal against 6 man blues - 3 headers from reds enough to see off spirited resistance from the blues - boris and hugo's mate from the arsenal put in good season debut performances. Post match pub contingent delighted to discover hot panninis on the menu until 9pm. "Raj didn't show tonight. very disappointing, especially since i'd stood romeo down saying we had a full complement." Raj: "I don't understand. I was in Paris and was certain that my name was not down for football. In fact I had seen a Hugo mail saying that there were only 4/5 a side etc. Not sure what happened, but if I was remiss I apologise." blues played well, but lost 7-6.
Wed, 08/03/2006 Chile 7 Italy 4 Unexplained no-shows by Park and Derrick. "...make sure to mention that I scored two goals and am genrally an all round good chap." - fatboy.
