8 Blues score for fun against a disorganised and demoralized opponent which, on paper, looked to be favoured. But that was before Yash had his best game of the season. Blues passed their way around, over and through Reds and ran out to a 6-0 lead at half time which came early due to a nasty injury to Tomaso. General consensus was that it was a ploy to get to the pub early and order the last dish of pasta but it looks like he'll be out for a few weeks. As the second half began, Tommy and the physio were escorted from the pitch under a hail of wayward shots from Blues. Reds score early to avoid a niller before Gordon scores a Suarez-esqe shot from inside his own half. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3MOXLe3T_o - commentary sounds like the noise Warner made when it went in). Reds reduced to shouting at each other to run, or to run somewhere else, or to come to or go long. A confrontation after the final whistle was only averted when Olly backed his captain. Reds organise a whip-round at the pub to pay for Hugo's physiotherapy.

7 A match of quality (for the blues) and incident for all. Blues race ahead by two as reds start as they ended -- by giving the ball away cheaply. Reds reply through two wonder goals -- the first a slide-rule pass from Mark with Olly sliding in to provide a Suarez-like finish. The second a pin-point 40-yard cross from Hugo over Gordon and onto the head of Jeff who powers it home (you are welcome Alexander) from just outside the area. Alexander answers with a fine goal of his own - dribbling across the field, shaping to play a reverse ball to Wills in space, and instead putting it into the top corner -- before Rupert evens things up with a trademark goal - lucking around three defenders before mishitting a shot that bends around three other defenders and the goalie hitting both posts before rolling slowly over the line. The remainder of the match was about the Blues defending. Saverio was Rupert's kryptonite - taking the ball off him at will - and demonstrated a new form of tackling (christened "the nap") to dispossess Nick. James, Sameer and Andy kept a high line and Reds obliged by passing it to them. Final score flatters the Reds who were outplayed. In the pub Warner bores everyone with observations about his phone's battery and all the Reds anxiously ask after Hugo C's health. MotM - Sameer

2 Reds were clearly determined to win tonight’s encounter by any means. This became evident in the opening five minutes when one of Reds strikers scythed down mercilessly Blues main striker who was nowhere near real play! That will teach Hugo to come back and defend! Reds had more of the territory and possession but every time they went ahead blues somehow came back. Half time was the turning point as Hugo Fuller pointed out that in its 20th year perhaps the usual tactic at worthless football of zonal defence and marking space may not be the way forward! A slightly confused reds then set about marking players and staying in their positions and oddly enough scored two or three unanswered goals against the 6’ 5” keeper that was G Baker returning from injury and doing his best impersonation of Paddy. At the pub when MoM votes were cast it was unanimous for M Davies. His movement and positional awareness were ethereal…..Blues win at the pub so overall 1-1 on aggregate.

1 So one sided - though not on paper - that coltart decided to leave with 15 minutes to play to go to a tennis match. Cremonesi bags 4; fuller a rebound header and a pile driver. Warner and Coltart take singles. Steve Davies - the snooker player - man of the match.

1 General agreement that Hugo (Fuller) was the difference between the two sides on the night, in a tightly contested game in which Red's marginal superiority paid ultimate dividends. For Blues, Arbib a shadow of his former self (and I'm not talking about a recently successful diet); Garton had a good game and got a deserved goal for his dogged perseverance; Inglis noisy between the sticks, taunting Red attackers at will.

4 Reynolds pre-match prediction of nutmegs comes to nothing. General consensus in the pub was that it was an enjoyable match marred by comical dives by Cuddigan. Steve Davies scores a blinder and Simon hits the post twice at his own end just to deny Reynolds the satisfaction of scoring.

4 A high quality match that left Reds wondering if they should extend Rupert's holiday and keep the winning streak alive. Reds arrived with their shooting boots on and only the heroics of Paddy kept the score respectable in the first half. Luckily fitness caught up with them and Blues were able to get back into the game in the 2nd but the score line suggests the match was closer than it was. Krick employs new "sit on head" defending and then gets hit in the knackers for his troubles. Blues win at the pub.

3 Reds win and effectively answer Rupert's weekly question. Good goals from Wills and blues never got going. Andy Smith debuts for both sides as Andrew Saunders is forced into goal with an injury. Man of the match: Yash who, on falling ill on the day, works hard to find a replacement. At the other extreme: Matt Guzzo who doesn't turn up.

2 9v8 because Warner doesn't read his emails. A high quality match that boiled over in the first ten minutes and simmered for the next 50. J. Romeo turns up ready to take on the world after a long absence. Rupert scores first with an unstoppable blast before blues score two (the second a particularly well worked goal) and reds answer in the final minutes. H. Cuddigan has a goal disallowed by a Welsh referee who blows just as Hugo stoops to head in at the far post. Video of the incident can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0JFuWqwFg4&sns=em Discussion in the pub focused on how well W. Stevenson has adapted his game to the WAFC environment. Rupert has two weeks to ponder how his team didn't win.

5 If all the matches this season are of such quality and provide so many talking points regular WAFC watchers will be very happy indeed. Highlights from the first match include: First goal of the season from S. GIllespie, a one-touch long-range rifle-shot which rounded off a flowing move. A Krick special own goal -- "Unstoppable" according to him. A man of the match performance from C. Stevenson A goal from midfield which left the keeper (A. Saunders) asking if the match had started. It had, 45 minutes earlier. R. Coltart starting the season the way he ended the last one, heading home after the pub asking himself, "How did we lose that one?" And the miss of the season from H. Cuddigan when he was through on goal and the goalie was opening the door for M. Davies who was 10 minutes late. Followed by the miss of the decade when H. Cuddigan calmly put the rebound of the miss-of-the-season wide by ten yards. While the goalie was still opening the door for M. Davies.

3 Slightly disappointing end of season affair ruined by yash's woefully inaccurate team selection. Tommy'sbollocks took a bashing courtesy of a hugofuller thunder drive. 7-4 to reds in the pub afterwards for free food & beverage on the wafc account.

3 Was there anything notable about tonight's game? Maya scored a great goal; Donald hit inglis in the nuts; Fuller unusually vocal and Baker back to his annoying worst in this regard after a brief injury-induced respite. One spectator only this week: the great Barry Davies who - after 20 years of hearing second hand stories from his son about the game - now knows why it's called Worthless Athletic...

4 Tardy slips for M Davies and R Garton. More Green regulars than reds for the first time this calendar year. Reds still win in the pub, of course. As for the match, an evenly balanced attack led the Reds to victories. Hugo C with a nifty chip scored the game winning goal. Greens struggled to break through a massed Red defense with Sameer covering a lot of ground and the rest of us relying on him to do so. Will S might have got a mention but a Green keeper saved well at the far post to deny him. Yash takes a mighty tumble and then tangles with Gillespie. Paddy not his usual self in goal tonight.

7 It is a bad sign when one side comes off the pitch asking each other if that was the worst game they ever played in Worthless colors. Or maybe they were just asking me. Anyway, Greens much stronger on paper which is just the way Reds like it - ready to spring on the counter attack. Unfortunately "spring" was not a word that you would associate with Greens on the night. Nor would you use the words shoot, defend, pass, track or run -- in fact the longest run of the night was Hugo's inexplicable run back to his car after the pub. Those assembled have never seen him move so quickly or purposefully. Greens run out easy winners on the night and Rupert confesses that, for the first time in weeks, he won't be going home wondering how he lost. Yash scores a blinder with his left foot. Reds win the battle of the pub 5-2. Actually 6-1 is more accurate as Tommy is Italian and therefor always a Red.

4 Minor concerns raised in the reds camp when Nick Haigh pulls out last minute, replacing himself with Sameer Godbole who last played in 2009. Luckily, Sameer turns out to be way better than Nick, to reds' great relief! Goals Tally as follows: Reds Cuddigan 3, Warner 2, Kline 1; Greens Coltart 2, M Davies 1, Warner 1. Alex Stevenson complains about a foul in the box, but Ethan says he just needs to be a bit stronger on the ball... Wills Stevenson can't understand why he's always on the losing side given he's the most capped Cambridge 'blue' (2) on the pitch. Perhaps if he passed once in a while?? In the pub, debuts for Maya and Sameer; Coltart the only green representative as Reds yet again win this later battle 5-1.

3 Warner stupidly picks the same red team as last week. A team that struggled to pass, defend, run or score. And he decided to improve a Green team that toyed wit Reds the week before. The only difference for reds is the return of Paddy in goal. Reds win. Reds win at the pub 7-1. Only Andy M saves Greens from a niller. Now that the weather is getting better will Green regulars start to turn up?

11 5 - 0 reds in the pub which means that over the two legs reds win on away goals! Saverio scores 5 and assists an extra 6... hugo proves that lightning never strikes twice as he slashes a second lucky volley wide. It's April and both droop and Saunders are still wearing tights. Tomaso get a yellow for simulating a striker. Yash lucky to stay on the pitch after two off the ball incidents. Hang on droop's just turned up in the pub which means a late equaliser for greens. Oh and Hugo's just bought a round. Wait a sec no he hasn't.

7 Debut for james droop, who - as good as was - couldn't help the favourite greens who lost despite coming close in the end and despite having an extra player. Basically, rupert gets all shirty every time he' s tackled; and the older wills gets the more anonymous he is on the pitch. In fact, to the amazement of all present in the pub, someone pointed out that he actually got a blue at Cambridge, though frankly that's really hard to believe... over and out till next week's exciting installment of abuse.

6 Good end to end game. Players sensibly now resorting to systematically fouling rupert rather than let him run a fifth ring around them. Very strong steve Davies performance. Definitely the player of the family over brothers mark and pete. Great to have Korean john back in the fold, though it looked like it might not be for long when he was hit on the head by a ball from a neighbouring pitch. HC, NW,RC,JP, AM in pub afterwards hugo explaining at length why arsenal are still the best...
